| [9th September 07] Lifeboat Debate (by Darren Gilchrist) Wednesday 29th August. Dural Toastmasters held their ever first Lifeboat Competition. I had the priviledge to act as a judge on the evening, along with our brilliant contestant Steve Makins; his lovely wife Nanda, and Alan McDonald as supporters. First up was a great socialiser to relax the crowd and let us get to know one another. 15 minutes of furious "Person Bingo" where we had to go around the room and find people who had done certain things, putting their names on the bingo card. Great fun! Now down to business. Eight clubs competing, Eight famous dead people! Here was the lineup... Margot Fontaine (the ballerina), Augustus (the first Roman emperor), Queen Victoria, Napolean Bonaparte (also known as "Blownapart"), The Australian Digger, Dom Pérignon (the French Monk who created Champagne), Sherlock Holmes, and of course Steve as Dr Christian Barnard (the renowned heart surgeon) Two qualifying rounds (four people each), with a final round (top 2 from each qualifying round), who would stay on the lifeboat? Who would take home the prize? With such strong competition (Napolean, Margot Fontaine were two highlights in the first round), it was clearly going to be tough job to even get into the final. Steve had a solid first round, even if perhaps slightly nervous :) and who wouldn't be! Then there was a break for dinner - and I'm not sure how Steve managed to get through the half hour break! Nerves were high (and that was just me!), as we waited to find out if Steve had made the final. On return the contestants progressing to the final were announced. YES! Steve was in! As with all contests - controversy was sure to raise its head during the evening. The first taste was, that surprisingly, Margot Fontaine did not make the final. Many were clearly disappointed. Steve clearly left his best to last. Personally I thought he won hands down with his argument and exhibition of Toastmaster skills. Of course the second round was all about not only arguing why Steve should stay, but also how to knock off the competition! His use at the end of "we are not amused" (in such a dry way) to have a dig at Queen Victoria was priceless! Unfortunately the judges of the final were not allowed to be fellow club members - so I couldn't vote! The winner in the end - Napolean Bonaparte. May he sink on the way back to France! hehehe Steve did a great job nevertheless, as did all the contestants. Well done Steve! The night was a thoroughly enjoyable one, and I can't wait for the one next year - and there's sure to be another! I'd strongly encourage all our members to compete at our club level in 2008, and attend the event hosted by Dural TM (thanks for such a great evening!) |

[3rd Mar 07] International Dinner night a great success![]() Last night heralded our very first International Dinner night - where everyone was encouraged to bring a dish or drink from their home (or adopted!) country. There was food-a-plenty from Thailand, India, Switzerland, Hungary, Poland, Australia, Mexico, Sri-Lanka, to name just a few countries. All was eaten during the, ehhem, "extended" break - who would want to go back to a meeting with so much delicious food! Thank you to everyone who came along and participated. We will no doubt do another again soon. |
|||||||||
[10th Mar 07] Congratulations to the International Speech & Evaluation Contest Winners!Congratulations to all the participants who "gave it a go" in

[28th Feb 06] Cumberland Forest Toastmasters 2005 Club Quality Audit ReportWe had excellent participation in the club audit this year. Thirteen (13) members and one (1) lapsed member contributed to this important survey. Again thank you to everyone who has assisted by providing your feedback or support during this effort. A special thanks to Cecilia Strachan, one of our members who sat on the audit committee. The survey responses were returned in two groupings. The first group was received in August 2005, while the second was provided in January 2006. Over all, the club is performing very well. No category polled more uncertain/negatives than positives. There is however, room for improvement in all areas. Areas in which we excelled - the top 2 categories
Areas we should particularly look for improvement in are the bottom 2 categories
"New Member Orientation" being the second worst categories has appeared again in this list of poor performers (though it was ranked last in 2004/2005 so perhaps some improvement has been made). Using our newly created "3Rs" motto or our club: Recruitment, ...we will be particularly focusing on the following 4 questions: [priority #1] Q08 Are new members assigned a coach / mentor
for one-on-one assistance? (Realisation / Retention) Documents available on this topic: |

Thank you Marcel! |

End of Year Christmas Party club meeting!On Monday 19 December 2005, the club members and guests all joined together for a fun and eventful Christmas Party meeting with a new role introduced: The BBQ Master! The meeting started off with a short normal meeting session, with two great speakers deliverying speeches about christmas. Then the meeting went onto fun and games when we all played Jeopardy where members battled for points by answering questions ranging from history to sports, followed by executives giving a session on The Year in Review, talking about what they found exciting throughout the year and what they look forward to in 2006. Barry, our Sergeant at Arms dressed up as surprise santa (whom in my opinion, was a little to thin!) and presented each present member and guests with a christmas gift, ending a very fruitful day at toastmasters. Photos can be viewed at this Kodak Gallery. You don't need to sign up to view the photos, simply click on "View Photos without signing in". |
